Toddler Crankies!

by Ivy B

Yesterday was one of the worst days we’ve seen in a while with baby girl.  She’s not the easiest child to make happy (unless she gets everything she wants when she wants) but yesterday, hubby and I were ready to put her in her crib with food, water, and some toys and run from the house.

Sensibly, I recommended that we ask someone to watch her so we could be gone for much longer …

Well, no one won … we just had to stay and deal with it until family arrived.  Thankfully the family with their  children helped her to forget what a bad day she was having.

Today started out similarly, and I was jealous of hubby for getting to go to work (though when it comes down to it, I don’t really want to work).  I was scared of what the day would bring… so scared, that I knew I had to plan something quick to get us out of the house.  So, I threw food in the crock pot and loaded up the diaper bag.  The plan was to find a park or parks near the house to explore.  After all, we are in a new neighborhood, and we don’t know much about the area and what toddler friendly places are around.

Our first stop was at a local historic park on the river where we strolled around to see an old farm house, barn, etc.  Further walking led us to a boardwalk to walk along the river’s edge.  Baby girl was enjoying the walk, looking at the animals, listening to the birds, looking out to the water, and checking out what little color Florida has to offer.

Since the park was small and didn’t have any play equipment, we headed out in search of a play ground.  We found a nearby park, and while not toddler-friendly, spent a few minutes rolling her ball down the slides, sliding, and climbing stairs.

So, it was time to end the fun and head home to have lunch and prepare for what I was hoping to be an on-time nap (which happened perfectly).  Apparently, we warded off some crankies because this is what I got at lunch:

Perfect reminder that sometimes we need a break from the house and, despite how I feel about her attitude during the worst of it, the break often leads to some good times 🙂

Oh how I hate those days! Sounds like you handled it right with the day out of fun. I'm in Florida too, and around us there are so many cool parks to explore.

Good for you for thinking positively. I am sure it would have been so much easier for you to call a sitter and run away but you didn't. You turned a frustrating experience into a good one.
